Legal Secretary (Reférendaire) to Judge Bernd Hammermann at the EFTA Court, Luxembourg.
Applications are invited for the above position which is expected to fall vacant in about January 2021. The position is for a one-year renewable contract, and is well remunerated (Grade A3/1 on EFTA salary scale1).
The post involves providing advice on both substantive and procedural points of law arising in cases before the Court to Judge Hammermann, preparing drafts of judgments and orders, and preliminary reports; preparing memos on procedural law questions; and, effective advocacy during the deliberations of cases. The working language of the Court is English. There is a need to be able to draft and translate press releases into German, and to proofread any errors in translation of legal documents from German into English. The position requires the ability to write and prepare speeches and articles, as required, in both English and German.
Applicants should be native German-speaking lawyer (bar registration not required), fluent in English, and be fully conversant with European Union and EEA law. Familiarity with Liechtenstein law would be an advantage. Institutional experience of working in a cabinet at either the EFTA Court, or the CJEU is advantageous. Excellent drafting skills are a prerequisite, as is the ability to operate effectively in a multinational environment. An ability to consider the policy implications in the case-law is necessary.
Applicants are likely to have an LLM or doctorate in EU/EEA law and be in the early stages of their careers.
